Cape Hatteras,
NC Road Trip
We planned our arrival in Cape Hatteras for 2PM on Saturday so we decided to split the
drive down into two days. Our drive started out beautiful, the sun was shining with hardly
a cloud in the sky. As we approached the DC area the weather went to crap and the traffic
slowed to a crawl. After a stop for dinner we drove on to Williamsburg, VA where we
stopped for the night.
Once in North Carolina the sun was back out and the rides started to show up. Our first
stop was Kitty Hawk. We met Dan Chiles' roommate Chris, who showed us Dan's 1972 Olds 442. Not far down the road in Naggs
Head we spotted just off of the main highway (NC 12) Cole Stinnette's 1966 Mustang. Cole was happy to tell us about
the Mustang he owned before he received his drivers license. Our last stop before the
beach was to check out a 1964 Mercury Comet.
Some routine maintenance had been done at a local mechanics so we stopped to check it out.
That got us to Avon, NC, our destination! Check back and you can see what we saw on the
island.
Chuck.

Once we got to Avon it was a lot of fun in the sun! On the way to see our
clans catch of the day while deep-sea fishing we made a stop to see Richard Rudisill's 1968 Plymouth Barracuda Convertible.
Richard makes it a point to visit Hatteras Island at least twice a year. Later, on a
grocery run, we spotted this 1934 Great
Gatsby (Cabriolet). Jim Ramey was glad to show us the kit car he built himself
and before we knew it, it was time to leave North Carolina. We made one more stop on the
way out, The Bodie Island Lighthouse. Parked outside of the lighthouse was Robert Moore's 1978 Chevy Corvette. After Robert's shift as a
volunteer at the lighthouse was over he proudly pointed out facts about his fine ride.
Check back next time to see where we stopped along the way home.

Twin Lakes State Park Burkeville, VA
- It was only an hour out of our way, so I convinced my family that a short side-trip to
Twin Lakes State Park near Burkeville, VA would be a nice
stop on our way home. Twin Lakes State Park was the sight for the 13th annual Dodge
Charger Meet! We found Burkville with no problem, however I had lost the name of the park
where the event took place. I stopped at the first gas station I found in Burkville and
asked the young man working there "Do you know where the Dodge Charger Meet is?"
"Dodge Charger, that's a type of car. Isn't it?" He replied Ouch, I thought.
"Yes it is. Do you know where they might have a car show around here?" Well he
gave me directions to a potential car show place. No Luck. Someone there gave me
directions to another place. No Luck Again. We ventured past the second park questioning
weather it was the place described to us or not. That's when we hit the jackpot, three
Chargers filling up at gas station. We followed them back to the park and snapped
shots of Tom Felice's 1968 Dodge
Charger, Lee Ebert's 1970 Dodge Charger
R/T, A 1973 GranTorino , and Keith
Winfree's 1968 Dodge Charger that is one
of the seven privately owned General Lee's
from The Dukes of Hazard.

- OK, so I told you that I ran into Tom and Lee at the gas station and followed them back
to the campgrounds. What I didn't tell you is that this camp grounds was way outside of
Burkeville and not the easiest thing to find. Had I been lucky enough to find the park I
would have needed even more luck to find the camp site which was tucked away next to the
lake. Much like the previous Road Trip (#3) there were more Dodge Chargers. Including
another General Lee! This one was used for TV commercials. Check out these sweet Chargers:
TJ Musik's 1968, Doug Spaeth's 1968 R/T, Pete Kochiss' 1969 (General Lee), and Keith Reed's 1969 R/T. After we had our fun
it was time to go, and drive all night to get home.
